Social Media, best friend or worst enemy?
Social media. Can’t live with it, can’t live without it. Well, you can live without it, but you would be out of the “know” on a lot of things. Sometimes I really love it, but I can say it definitely gets to me at times. Last summer, I almost gave it up. My husband and I were house hunting, and things were just kind of stressful. My youngest was around four months. I was going to take a break for three months. Well, I ended up taking a break for three weeks, but I really needed it. Parenting isn’t always easy, and I think that social media masks the hard parts at times (especially when you are sleep deprived). Not saying I want to see other kids meltdowns on Facebook, but I think I forget sometimes that social media isn’t real life.
Why would anyone want to take a break from Facebook or similar sites?
If you say anything close to these 4 things when viewing Social Media:
- A picture of someone’s perfect organic dinner makes you feel like a failed cook
- Wow, everyone looks fantastic in that family photo; even their hair is perfect
- You start to wonder why you didn’t think up something interesting to post
- You never do anything fun compared to all the cool activities your friends are doing
Okay, I could have made this list a lot longer, but I think you get the picture. Everyone’s life isn’t perfect. I know that I would be way more annoyed to see people being miserable on Facebook, but I think sometimes we all forget that Facebook, along with other social networks, are not reality. It’s life filtered. Your friends are going to want to show you a great photo of their family. Odds are, people aren’t going to post a photo of what they look like right when they first wake up in the morning (well, I’m going to hope that I don’t ever see one, but you never know).
Anyway, it’s okay to take a break from social media if you need to remember that you aren’t a boring person who has bad hair and makes stupid meals.
